RECESS
Given the site of the Temple Street Garage in New Haven, this design was forged around the theme of life long learning. In thinking of an apt program, one that encourages learning through exploration and even risk-taking, I Ianded on a design for a children’s center. The goal was to create a playscape for children on the top deck of the garage– one that would encourage autonomy for children through the use of abundant nooks and crannies, passageways and thresholds, and in-between spaces.
The design scheme is divided it into three zones, each of which constitutes its own ‘world’ to explore. The top tray zone is defined by a valley landscape, the middle portion by a forest landscape, and the lower tray by a meandering stream.
